Settlement-Community Settlement-Neighbourhood

Kampong Glam is derived from the Malay words for compound, "kampong", and the paperbark tree called "Gelam", which is commonly found in the area and used for boat-making, food seasoning and even medicine. One of the oldest neighbourhood, it too was demarcated by the British in 19th century to be the home of Malay, Arab and Bugis communities. Nowadays, it is a seamless blend between cultural traditions and a burgeoning hipster community. Just like Chinatown and Little India, Kampong Glam has also embraced modernity without forgetting its roots. You can find traditional Malay grub here just as easily as a hip cafe serving acai. Street art aficionados can satisfy themselves with Singapore's first outdoor gallery, home to 30 works of street art and murals by local and international artists alike!
